A little early, and a bit out there, but... :P Somehow, I get the feeling this is more a... ah well, you'll see. ^^;

March 1

*karan*

The bell attached to the SPR's office door rang out suddenly as it announced the arrival of a visitor shortly after 10 A.M. The administrative part-timer, Yasuhara Osamu, turned at the sound to find Hara Masako standing in the doorway looking a little uncertain. He himself had arrived an hour earlier and had been in the midst of putting away some books on the shelves, while Mai had some errands to take care of that day and wasn't expected in the office until early in the afternoon.

“Ah, good morning, Hara-san!” he said with a friendly smile.

Masako hesitated briefly before nodding to Yasuhara. “G-good morning, Yasuhara-san,” she said stuttering slightly.

Yasuhara cocked his head slightly when he heard the young girl stutter; it wasn't like her. It also wasn't like her to remain standing in the doorway as she was currently.

“Won't you please have a seat,” he said as he moved to usher her in to sit on the sofa. “I'll go make you some tea.”

Masako shook her head before he could turn to go to the kitchenette. “No, that's alright,” she said.

Yasuhara paused; apparently, she didn't want any tea.

Masako slowly sat on the sofa, while Yasuhara remained standing. When Masako opened her mouth, as though to continue speaking, only to close it again, Yasuhara couldn't help feeling that something wasn't right with the young medium. She was usually quite self-confident, almost haughty.

“Um, Hara-san, is everything alright?” he asked gently. “If you're looking for Taniyama-san, she won't be in until early this afternoon.”

Masako shook her head and her silky black hair fell forward hiding her face. “I'm fine,” she said quietly. “That's not why I'm here.”

Apparently, she hadn't come to see Mai either.

However, Masako's behaviour confused Yasuhara as he tried to figure out why she'd come and why she was acting so strangely.

“If you're looking for the boss, he's in his office,” Yasuhara offered. “Shall I go get him? Are you here with a case?”

Masako's gaze fell to her hands clasped in her lap as she shook her head again. Yasuhara's confusion continued to mount. He knew that Masako was close friends with Mai and Ayako and that the ladies would occasionally spend time together. And, last time he checked, Masako and Mai were supposed to be friendly rivals for his boss's attention, although Naru seemed completely oblivious to that. But beyond those two, Yasuhara couldn't think of anyone else the medium would come visit at the office.

“......Have you come to see Lin-san about something...?” Yasuhara asked uncertainly. While he didn't think the two interacted much outside of the SPR's investigations, Yasuhara figured that it was possible the medium might want to talk to the tall Chinese man on a professional level.

Masako finally looked up and glared at Yasuhara. He could see that her cheeks were slightly flushed. “Why are you bringing up Lin-san's name here?” she asked sulkily. “While I have nothing against him, why would I come to speak to him?!”

Yasuhara immediately realised he annoyed the medium but had no idea why.

“Um... Hara-san...?” he asked confused.

“Is it so bad that I came here to see you, today?” she asked as she turned her face away from him. She was clearly in a snit, but Yasuhara still didn't know what he'd done wrong. Worse still, he had no idea how to appease the difficult girl. But before he could think about that, there was the matter of what Masako had just said.

“Eh? Me?!” he asked surprised. “Um...” Yasuhara was completely caught off guard by Masako's revelation.

“That's right,” she said as she turned her gaze onto him again. Anger smoldered in her black eyes, but Yasuhara could also see that her cheeks were still flushed, and he realised that she was trying to hide embarrassment.

Yasuhara blinked as he quickly shifted mental gears. “I'm sorry, I had no idea,” he said as he smiled smoothly at Masako. He sat down on the sofa opposite her. “If there's anything I can do for you, then the unworthy Yasuhara is completely at your service.”

However, his smooth manner seemed to annoy the medium even more and her anger became more apparent.

“If you're going to act that way, I'm leaving,” she said primly. Masako reached for her bag.

“Ah, sorry!” Yasuhara said sounding uncharacteristically flustered. He wasn't having any luck reading his guest. All he knew was that he was doing everything wrong.

Masako paused as she looked at Yasuhara levelly; her blush still hadn't abated. Masako sighed. “Mai told me if I came in now, I'd be able to catch you alone. But had I known things would be this awkward, I wouldn't have come,” she said as she looked away from Yasuhara again.

Yasuhara couldn't help smiling wryly at Masako's confession. “I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make things so awkward for you,” he said.

Masako looked at Yasuhara and nodded. “You should be,” she said. Masako reached into her bag and held something out for Yasuhara.

Confused, Yasuhara accepted the item and looked at it—it was slim, neatly wrapped, and carefully tied with a small ribbon. In other words, a present. Yasuhara looked back at Masako, but she'd already gotten up and had made her way to the door in record time.

“Hara-san...?” Yasuhara asked confused.

Masako refused to look at him and he could see that her cheeks were flushed an even deeper crimson than before. Masako glanced at Yasuhara briefly as she opened the door. Just as she slipped out the doorway, her voice rang out.

“Happy birthday, Yasuhara-san.”

Omake:

Later that afternoon, Mai and the rest of the Irregulars had all gathered in the office with various presents for Yasuhara. Surprisingly, even Naru and Lin had come out of their offices and were having tea in the reception area, when the bell attached to the door rang out announcing a visitor. Masako stood in the doorway. And just as when she'd come in the morning, she looked a little uncertain.

“Hey, Masako-chan,” Bou-san said as he waved at her.

“Ah, Masako, come in! I was just about to make everyone tea,” Mai said from where she was standing near to the sofas. Apparently, Mai had been making her way to the kitchenette, when Masako arrived.

Masako glanced around the room briefly when her eyes suddenly met Yasuhara's gaze. Masako instantly turned bright red as she remembered their awkward encounter earlier that day. “Ah, no, that's okay,” she said. Her words were unusually hesitant and caused Mai to pause as she was about to head for the kitchenette again.

“Eh?” Mai looked at her friend in surprise.

Masako didn't pause as she quickly went over to Mai, grabbed her friend by the arm and started dragging Mai towards the doorway. “Naru, I'm borrowing Mai for a while,” Masako said. Her face was still bright red.

“M-Masako?!” Mai asked shocked as she found herself suddenly being pulled towards the door. “W-wait, Masako--”

Masako didn't wait for Naru's permission as she quickly dragged her friend out of the office and away from her work. The others stared in surprise at the young medium's unusual actions and watched as the door closed quietly behind the two girls. They all exchanged confused looks before staring at the closed door once again.

“Mai... got dragged out of here without her jacket...” Bou-san said slowly.

“I wonder if something's wrong with Hara-san?” John said sounding worried.

Ayako stared at the door, amused at the young medium's actions.

“Hara-san's face was very red, wasn't it?” Lin said quietly.

Naru stared at the door. Masako had dragged Mai out of the office before she could make tea.

Yasuhara couldn't help laughing. “Hara-san is actually quite cute, isn't she?”

Hope folks enjoy! ^^;;

Yes, first impressions made from the anime for the series. Could tolerate her more by the end of the series but full points to Mai for wearing her down ^^

The conversation she and Mai had about how Masako's jealous of Naru's treatment of Mai...
But thank-you for sharing it! ^_^
