Hmm... I see what you're talking about. The first one would normally be okay that way if it were on its own, but is a bit weak given the stuff that follows - especially having a second usage afterwards. The second one's a definite "Taniyama-san" moment, though. (sic. he's being sarcastic/insulting.)

It's from the end of the book. Namely this part:
Saying that I looked around the room.
Mai: "What about the expenses to stay here?"
Noll: "It's being covered by those who view me favourably."
M: "I want to see the faces of people who'd squander favour on you."
N "There are some people who are good at judging things."
M: "You fraud."
N: "If I tried, I might be able to get twice what I do now."
I couldn't help sighing; he'd said that in an oddly serious manner.
