Hmm... no way to tell for sure yet, but at a guess, I'd say this is probably going to be AU. I don't think Lydia's going to make it to summer before becoming pregnant. ^^;

Little Lady

One summer afternoon at the Ashenbert residence...

Edgar sat on the edge of Lydia's desk toying idly with a small jewel encrusted box as he watched his wife write a letter in response to a consultation letter. With the social season well under way, their evenings were often filled with various engagements, while their days were busy with both social activities as well as business. As a result, they had little time to spend alone with one another. While Edgar was used to the hectic schedule, Lydia still wasn't entirely comfortable being out in public despite all the care he'd taken to make her entry into society as easy as possible for her. Here, in London, amongst Edgar's circle of friends, Lydia was much less likely to be a target of the ladies's scorn. However, that wasn't the only thing that was bothering Edgar. This season also saw a sudden rash of fae trouble on his lands, so Lydia was busier than ever. Worse still, even though Edgar tried hiding some of the letters petitioning for help in order to lighten Lydia's workload (and ensure that they could spend more time together), Lydia found out about what he'd done from the hobgoblins and other little fae living in the residence. Lydia hadn't been the least bit pleased, and for the past few days, she's been doing her best to ignore Edgar and take care of her paperwork.

Edgar sighed. Having Lydia ignore him for a few days was bad enough. But before this started, Lydia had been away for a few days as she went to one of their holdings in order to deal with the mysterious disappearance of livestock in the area. And while Edgar wanted to go with Lydia, she'd wanted to deal with the issue as soon as possible. Unfortunately, Edgar had an engagement he simply couldn't get out of, and as a result, he'd been forced to agree to let Lydia go with Kelly, Raven, and Nico, while he stayed behind in London. And though he didn't know it at the time, for some reason, Lota also ended up going with Lydia. As did a certain horse.

'That horse...' Edgar thought annoyed. 'He still hasn't given up on Lydia even though she's mine now.'

Edgar sighed as he looked down at his beloved wife. Lydia had refused his invitation to join him on the terrace for tea saying she had too much work to do and couldn't afford to take a break. So, she was having her tea at her desk as she continued working instead. He watched as she reached out for her teacup and took a sip of tea. As tempted as he was to use one of the seeds the woodwose had given as an engagement present, it was utterly pointless here in Lydia's office where her work was. And given her earlier refusal, he doubted he could get her to agree to go anywhere where its effects could be put to good use right now.

Edgar looked up when he heard Lydia sigh, and watched as she put down her pen.

"And? How long are you planning on staying here?" she asked exasperated. "Your work has been piling up, too, hasn't it?"

Edgar smiled gently at his wife as he reached out and took her hand. "Well, yes. But I've already finished my work for the day, so I wanted to spend some time with my lovely wife," he said as he kissed her hand lightly. He watched amused as Lydia blushed slightly. He loved how she still reacted so innocently despite being married.

Lydia tried to pull her hand away from him, but Edgar cradled it in both hands. He pressed his lips to her palm.

"E-Edgar... I still have a lot of work to do..." Lydia protested. Her voice wavered uncertainly as he laced his fingers with hers.

"If only you directed but a fraction of the attention you pay to your work to me," he said with a sigh before reluctantly letting go of her hand. Edgar looked at Lydia wistfully. "But Lydia, you've been concentrating on your work for too long. You need to take a break."

Lydia shook her head. "You're the one who hid these letters from me. Not until I finish taking care of them," she said stubbornly. She picked up her teacup and took a final sip. She grimaced slightly. It had gotten cold and there was just a hint of bitter as she finished it off.

"By the way, Lydia," Edgar said as he reached out and captured a lock of her hair. He toyed with it letting it slide between his fingers. "I heard you kissed Kelpie the other day."

"!" Lydia looked up at Edgar shocked into immobility.

"I also heard that it's not the first time you kissed him either," he continued. His tone was very even as he looked at his wife. Lydia's cheeks turned redder and redder as he watched.

"U-um... Edgar..." she began uncertainly. "I-it's not..."

"Regardless what you might say, he's still a man," he said mildly.

Lydia stared at Edgar flustered. "E-Edgar... Kelpie's not a man, but a male. He's a horse, after all," she said hesitantly.

Edgar shrugged slightly. "Well, yes. But he takes human form, and for all intents and purposes looks like a man."

Lydia looked down. She couldn't deny what Edgar said, but nothing inappropriate had happened between her and Kelpie. More importantly, he was one of the fae. Lydia took a deep breath trying to calm herself. Edgar had caught her completely off-guard. Lydia looked up at him again. "Edgar, that kiss... Kelpie asked for it as his reward for his having helped so much on my trip. It was much the same as when I kissed him back in the Hebrides." She reached forward, grasping the edge of his frock coat.

Edgar sighed softly as he slowly covered her hand with his and wondered briefly how best to continue when he heard Raven enter the room. Edgar reached out with his other hand and ran a finger lightly along her lower lip. "I'll forgive you if you kiss me," he said smiling at her gently.

"Wha-!" Lydia instantly turned bright crimson and froze. She, too, had heard Raven when he entered her office. Worse still, she could see him from where she sat.

Raven stood frozen in the middle of the room. He'd brought some more tea for the two but didn't know what to do when he heard Edgar's comment. Should he leave out of consideration for the two, or should he ignore them, finish serving tea, and get out as soon as possible?

A full 30 seconds went by before Edgar chuckled and bent down and kissed Lydia lightly. "Too bad. Time's up," he said softly with a meaningful smile.

Neither Raven nor Lydia had moved during that short, tense interval as though time stood still. And both of them relaxed at the sound of Edgar's voice. Raven moved to the coffee table in order to serve tea, while Lydia sighed silently in relief. At least Edgar didn't seem to be too upset with her over Kelpie. However, her relief was short-lived when Edgar tapped the jewelled box he'd been toying with earlier.

Lydia's gaze went to the box at that small sound, and her eyes widened in surprise. She looked up at Edgar. "Edgar, you didn't..." she said stunned.

Edgar grinned at her mischievously. "Coblynau gave this to us to use should it ever seem like one of us is being unfaithful," he said amused. "And you said you'd hang onto it since you thought it far more likely that I would be the unfaithful one..."

He got to his feet and pulled Lydia to her feet as well. She was too stunned to resist as he led her to the sofa so they could have tea together.

"Edgar, it was only on the forehead!" she exclaimed. "Just like when I kissed him back in the Hebrides!"

Edgar just smiled brightly. "I can't wait to find out what sort of effect the fae magic will have," he said as he helped Lydia to her seat.

>.> I *so* can't write romance, so trying to write Edgar is... >.<;; Worse still, not only am I in a serious writing slump, I still can't grasp the characters well enough to write decently either. >.<;; I hate pulling teeth. Still, the shower is, by far, the most 'productive' and fertile ground for plot bunnies. :P
