I guess you can call webclap a 'push-of-the-button sign of support' for site owners. I see it a lot with J site owners as well as blog owners. ^^; All it really is is a button people can push to express their appreciation for your site without having to say anything. You can hit the button as often or as little as you like and it's all anonymous.
One of the things that site owners do with Webclap is to put a special 'thank you for your support' item inside, so those who do take the time to hit the button can read a new short SS or see a new illustration. These are often rotated out and put on the website when the Webclap is updated.
There's also a simple message sender which allows people to send a quick word to the writer if they so desire (something simple like "Ganbatte kudasai!" or what have you. The chara limit is fine for Japanese but for English I think it's a bit stingy. ^^; So it also allows for basic albeit anon communication where a BBS or email address would've been used before.
There are a number of options with webclap including what messages are shown in the applause pages and in what order. For all that it's a very simple concept, the script does have a variety of uses which makes it fun and interesting. If you're interested in seeing how it works and setting it up for yourself, I can guide you through the set-up and everything. ^_^
Poor kitty! But I'll bet he had fun... right?
*laughs* I guess, but I'd think that sort of thing would hurt! (Not that he said anything; maybe too embarrassed.) ^^;
