'Did you enjoy your evening alone with the doctor?'
Mai's eyes widened when the unknown woman asked her that question. It was unthinkably rude and certainly had no place being asked by a stranger at afternoon tea. Mai was so shocked that she was at a loss as to how to answer. After all, last night...
Mai paled as she thought about what transpired during the night while she and Noll were in Dover. Parts of that day were a bit hazy in her mind while others...
Mai shook her head as she looked at the woman who'd confronted her. “I don't see how anyone... could consider that sort of thing 'enjoyable',” Mai said trembling. “It doesn't matter how often...” Mai's voice trailed off. Mai couldn't stop shaking as she remembered events from the night before.
The woman's eyes widened in surprise as she choked back a derisive laugh. “What's this? Are you such a child that you can't handle... Hey!” she protested sharply.
Noll gave the woman a cold, contemptuous look as he physically intervened between her and Mai cutting her off; stepping between them also put him very close to Mai. He took Mai by the arm and steered her to an empty couch on one side of the room and sat her down before taking a seat beside her. Yasuhara, Lin, and Madoka looked at one another uncertainly before trailing after the two.
Noll sighed as he looked down at Mai. “Try not to think about it too much,” he said quietly.
“But...” Mai was pale as she looked at Noll wide-eyed. She couldn't stop the memories that came flooding back bringing tears to her eyes. “But...”
Noll sighed as he rapped Mai on the head lightly. “I have to admit, your ability to get into trouble is truly astounding, Taniyama-san.”
“Wha-! I'm not that bad!” Mai exclaimed as she glared up at Noll. Her tears instantly dried at his comment.
Noll raised an eyebrow and a cynical smile played about his lips. “I believe we were in Dover for a total of 18 hours when you managed yesterday. That might be a record even for you.”
Mai flushed slightly as she remembered the little boy they met as she and Noll were returning to their hotel after exploring some of the more historical haunted sites in Dover. Neither of them had been prepared for the chance encounter. The boy had only been about eight. And when Mai spoke to him...
'Please, don't hurt me, mister. Please.' he'd pleaded, unable to get away from the man.
The boy's memories flooded through her as he possessed her body, and she ended up seeing how the boy died. He'd been physically abused and sexually molested before being brutally beaten to death. And Mai saw it all, again and again, during the course of the night. The young boy didn't even realise he'd possessed Mai when he ran into the woods to hide from Noll. And worse for Mai, the boy hadn't realised he'd died at the hands of that man so many years ago. It took a long time for Mai to be able to reach the boy's closed spirit and even longer for Noll to find her as she tried to dig in the ground in search of his remains with her bare hands. As a result, neither of them managed to get much sleep and they almost ended up being late for the afternoon tea party.
Madoka, Lin, and Yasuhara exchanged confused looks as they watched over Noll and Mai. The woman confronting Mai had drawn a lot of attention from the other attendees onto Mai, and moving to one side of the room did little to diffuse their interest. However, there was little the others could do about that.
“Um, Shochou...” Yasuhara said hesitantly.
Noll glanced at Yasuhara when his cell phone suddenly went off in his pocket. Noll sighed as he pulled it out. Normally, he wouldn't have had it on while attending such a function, but he hadn't had any choice this time.
“Excuse me,” he said as he opened the phone. “Hello? ... Yes, speaking. ... I see. Thank you. I'm sorry, but could you relay that information to Mai, as well? ... One moment.”
Noll turned to Mai and held his phone out for her. “It's for you,” he said quietly.
Mai looked at Noll surprised. “Eh? For me?” she asked confused.
“That's what I said,” Noll said.
Mai couldn't read anything from his tone and reluctantly accepted his phone. “H-hello?” she said hesitantly.
“Noll, what happened yesterday?” Madoka asked. “Why's anyone calling you let alone Mai-chan on your cell phone? And for Heaven's sake, why did you leave it on while you were here?”
Noll sighed and shook his head. “It's a long story, and I had no choice” he said.
Mai was talking quietly to the person on the phone in stilted English when she suddenly started crying. “'Found'? E-to... 'mitsukatta'. Mitsukatta?! Yokatta... Um... I'm glad. Thank you very much for calling.”
Mai turned to Noll and held his phone out to him. “They found him,” she said smiling teary-eyed.
Noll smiled faintly as he looked at Mai gently. He pulled his handkerchief from his breast pocket and handed it to Mai. “Yeah,” he said.
Lin and Yasuhara exchanged glances as they realised Mai most likely managed to get herself into trouble with a spirit last night. Madoka, unable to follow the conversation, rounded on Noll.
“Noll, explain! What was that all about?!” Madoka demanded.
Noll sighed as he looked at Madoka. “I suppose this trip wasn't a total loss,” he said with a shrug. “I now know that Mai's more like Gene than Hara-san.”
Madoka was taken aback by Noll's comment. 'Hara-san, that's the young medium in Japan. I thought he mentioned she was more of a psychometrist than a true medium. Gene, though, was a true medium......' Madoka's eyes widened as she stared at Noll and Mai. 'You don't mean...?!'
Madoka looked at Noll. “Noll, where were you and Mai-chan last night?” she asked suspiciously.
Noll looked at her and raised a cynical eyebrow. “We were in Dover?”
“That's not what I meant, you little brat!” Madoka exclaimed. “Where in Dover were you?”
Noll shrugged. “I don't know where exactly, but it was some wooded area not too far from the castle.”
“You were outside – in the woods – the entire night?!?” Madoka shrieked. In her surprise, Madoka forgot to keep her voice down drawing more looks from curious onlookers.
“Madoka, be quiet,” Noll said annoyed. “We weren't outside the entire night. I believe we went to the police station at around 4 A.M., so we were inside after that. They're the ones who just called.”
Madoka stared off into the distance stunned. Most young couples, when they go off on their own, like Noll and Mai did, do so to have a little more time together and to be alone. But she'd apparently been hoping for far too much from the young scientist and his assistant. They'd gone off... found themselves a ghost and spent part of the night at a police station.
Noll grimaced when his phone went off again; he'd forgotten to turn it off when Mai returned it to him. He glanced at the number displayed and sighed as he answered it. “Hello? ... Yes, speaking. ...... I'm afraid that's really not possible. ...... One moment,” he said breaking off the conversation for a moment. “Madoka, Mai and I are returning to Japan tomorrow. You're the one who wanted us to come here, you deal with this.” Noll thrust his phone at Madoka.
Madoka took the phone unthinkingly. Her mind was still reeling in shock from the realisation that Mai's initial response to the rude woman wasn't the response of an innocent girl who'd had a less than stellar night, but was instead... “Hello, this is Madoka Mori. To whom am I speaking?” Madoka said to the person on the other end of the line. Her eyes went wide when she heard the response from the other end. Any hope she'd had for the slightest bit of romance between Noll and Mai evaporated as it was made all too clear that their night had been anything but romantic.
When Noll turned to the rest of his group, Mai was looking at him curiously. He sighed. “They wanted us to come in again for further questioning,” he explained with a shrug.
Mai looked surprised. “But...”
“Idiot. That kid's been dead for quite some time. We've done what we can for them. We're going back to Japan tomorrow,” he said.
Mai blinked at his statement then nodded. “Yeah.” Mai smiled after a brief pause. “At least they found him though.”
